4.4 from 767 reviews

Classic waffles are a timeless breakfast favorite that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Made with simple pantry staples like flour, eggs, milk, butter, and baking powder, these waffles come together quickly and cook evenly in a waffle iron for a deliciously satisfying start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and then mix in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Combine the wet and dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix to keep the batter light and fluffy.
  2. Preheat the Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly grease the grids with non-stick spray or brush with some melted butter to prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the Waffles: Pour the batter onto the preheated waffle iron, using enough to just cover the waffle grid. Close the lid and cook for 4-5 minutes or until the waffles are golden brown and crisp. The cooking time may vary depending on your waffle iron model.
  4. Serve: Carefully remove the waffle with a fork or tongs and serve immediately with your favorite toppings like syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream. Keep cooked waffles warm in a low oven if making in batches.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, you can substitute half of the milk with club soda or sparkling water.
  • Do not overmix the batter as it can make the waffles tough.
  • You can make the batter ahead of time and refrigerate for up to 24 hours; stir gently before using.
  • If you want to freeze waffles for later, cook them fully and then freeze in a single layer before storing in a zip-top bag.
  • Add-ins like chocolate chips, blueberries, or nuts can be folded into the batter for variety.
