A flavorful and spicy Shrimp Dirty Rice recipe combining tender shrimp, savory ground pork sausage, and aromatic vegetables cooked with Cajun spices and long grain rice for a classic Louisiana-inspired dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp and Sausage

  • 1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 lb ground pork sausage
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Vegetables

  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Rice and Seasoning

  • 1 cup long grain white rice
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • Optional: hot sauce for serving

Instructions

  1. Cook the shrimp: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the shrimp until pink and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set aside to keep warm.
  2. Brown the sausage: In the same skillet, add the ground pork sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon to crumble it evenly. This will add rich, savory flavor to the dish.
  3. Sauté the vegetables: Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and celery to the sausage. Cook the mixture for about 5 minutes or until the vegetables are softened and fragrant, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  4. Add garlic and spices: Stir in the minced garlic, Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices and release their aromas.
  5. Toast the rice: Add the long grain white rice to the skillet, stirring to combine. Cook the rice for 1-2 minutes until it is lightly golden and toasted, which will enhance its flavor and texture.
  6. Simmer the rice: Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet with a lid, and let it simmer gently for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and has absorbed the broth.
  7. Combine shrimp and garnish: Remove the skillet from heat, then stir in the cooked shrimp and chopped fresh parsley. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper to taste as needed.
  8. Serve: Serve the shrimp dirty rice hot, with optional hot sauce on the side for an extra kick of heat.

Notes

  • Use fresh or frozen shrimp for best results; thaw if frozen before cooking.
  • Adjust the cayenne pepper to control the spice level according to your preference.
  • Ground pork sausage can be substituted with ground turkey or beef if desired.
  • For gluten-free option, confirm that the Cajun seasoning and chicken broth do not contain gluten.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be reheated on the stove or microwave.
